The Tacoma Open was held at Fircrest in 1945 and 1948 and drew Byron Nelson and the rest of the game's top players. In 1945, when he was sweeping the nation with his 11 consecutive victories and winning 18 of the 30 tournaments he entered, Nelson struggled at Fircrest. He ended up tied for ninth, his worst finish all year.  In 1960, Arnold Palmer was the fan favorite at the Carling Open. Don January set the course record with a 63 on the first day, but struggled to a 75 the next day in a testament to the variety Fircrest offers day after day.

Ken Still, a former PGA Tour player and Ryder Cup player, has called Fircrest home ever since the mid-1950s. Numerous times, he's brought his friends from the world of sports to play Fircrest, including Sandy Koufax, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Lee Trevino.
